Maine artist Lyn Asselta will explore utilizing texture to create mood in landscape paintings, from underpainting to final strokes.

Texture and atmosphere work with color and composition to contribute to the mood of a painting, a sense of distance in the landscape, and they even lend themselves to more sophisticated mark making. 

The relationship of the underpainting to the marks that we make with pastel is an important part of creating texture, and our ability to understand the use of hard and soft edges, along with shifts in value, adds to our understanding of creating atmosphere in our paintings.  From beginning to end, texture and atmosphere play important roles in the painting process.  Let’s explore both!

Lyn is a Pastel Society of America Master Pastelist, a Southeastern Pastel Society Master Pastelist, an International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) Eminent Pastelist, and a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York City.  She founded the First Coast Pastel Society (FL) and has had the honor of being an Artist in Residence for the National Park Service at Acadia National Park in Maine.
