The Pastel Society of Mississippi (PSM) serves as a venue for friendship & encouragement among fine artists & pastel practitioners, promoting an understanding & appreciation of pastel painting throughout the state.
History
PSM began in the fall of 2008, when Alan Flattmann of Covington, Louisiana, an internationally known pastelist, gave a pastel workshop in Jackson, Mississippi. There were so many participating artists who loved pastels as a medium that he encouraged them to form a group — and so they did.
The group’s founding members began meeting informally once a month in 2009 at Jackson Street Gallery, with their first president being Cecelia Baker. During their third year, under the leadership of Julia Sherwood, the group formally became a Pastel Society by fulfilling the requirements of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). In January 2011, the group was officially accepted into the International Society.
Programming & Membership
In addition to monthly meetings, which feature special programs, PSM offers workshops several times a year to emphasize continuing education and the camaraderie of artists in the use of pastel in fine art.
Membership in PSM is open to anyone who completes a membership application & pays dues. Full membership is $30 per year. Members must be up-to-date on dues in order to participate in group activities, such as shows, exhibitions, or workshops.
Meetings are held on the last Monday of each month, with occasional exceptions being made for special events & group painting sessions.
